Absolutely hilarious. I went into this one with no expectations whatsoever. Just happened to bump into multiple posts from manga readers saying this could be gold.
And boy, were they right. Joke after joke, I find myself laughing every other minute. I'm having a lot of fun with this series so here's a short summary of what's been going on.
Kazama's Party!
The main character, Kazama Kenji, arrives on the first day at school with his friends that form the "Kazama Gang".
Delinquents with a mission to oppose authority couldn't possibly be phased by 4 cute and crazy girls in a "Game Dev Club", right? That is exactly what happens in a very comical way.
The Game Dev Club is on the brink of extinction. What they need is just one additional member to fill the void so their club won't have to be disbanded.
After a lot of wackiness and shounen mockery (my favorite kind of jokes) by the girls, Kenji is suddenly a member of the club. Roka (club president), Minami, Sakura and Chitose, the 4 girls I mentioned earlier, are very dynamic characters. Each with their own "powers" and characteristics.
The episode ends with Ataru, Kenji's friend, being introduced as Chitose's rival. You see, Chitose is not just a member of the Game Dev Club. She is also the student council president, while Ataru is the jealous vice president. Ataru aims to prove his superiority by enduring Chitose's harsh treatment. His extremely submissive behavior naturally provides the lols. Ataru and Kazama somehow end up inside the girl's changing room at the end of the episode. Genuinely by accident, but we all know that excuse never flies. Not in anime.
Curse You, Fake Game Creation Club!!
Our second encounter with the Game Dev Club tells us that Kenji was actually suspended because of his little adventure with Ataru in the last episode.
While being somewhere that is not school, he meets the Game Dev Club. The real Game Dev Club. Takao, president of the club, goes on to explain that there is a fake Game Dev Club. The one Kenji is now a member of...
We get introduced to the real Game Dev Club. It goes without saying that Takao, Yamada, Sakuragaoka and Inada each have their own crazy factor to add to the show as well.
Back at HQ, (well, the fake HQ) Kenji is back and there's a discussion on what the club will do at the school festival. Fujou Academy's festival is a perfect opportunity to get some exposure, right?
Well, only if your club consists of capable members. Just as they're confronted with their own lack of game developing expertise, Takao, president of the real club, barges in and throws a fit. She swears to shut down Roka's club and calls her a traitor.
That's when we get a flashback on the history of both clubs. Basically: Roka was a member of Takao's club, but Roka was too unique a person to be appreciated by the other members. Chitose noticed that and gave the club a hard time, using her authority. Roka felt responsible and left. The club almost disbanded but bounced back. Takao really liked Roka and wanted her back on the club. That's when she learns that Roka had formed her own club with Chitose. The one Kenji is now a part of. So Takao's actions are all because she misses Roka, basically. Yeah, that kind of character. A Roka-Takao confrontation ends up in a challenge. If Takao's club gets more visitors at the festival, Roka's club will get absorbed into Takao's. If Roka wins then, [CENSORED].
Fujou Academy Freedom Festival, AKA FuF Festival
D-Day. The festival is here and the competition is ongoing. After Takao and Kenji both check to see how the rivaling clubs are doing, they come to the conclusion that Roka's club is winning easily.
The emphasis of this episode is on the fact that games developed with a PC aren't always better than real life games like bowling, basketball etc. Roka's funhouse beating Takao's team of game devs was deeper than it might have intended to be. I definitely got something out of that.
Roka's club ends up winning and both clubs agree to coexist. Chitose tells Takao that Roka now finally has a place she can call home, her club.
Takao, now with her feelings all sorted out, admits defeat. So as previously agreed, Chitose can now [CENSORED]. No seriously, she gets to grope Takao's boobs. Offscreen though, before you ecchi hunters start drooling!
D-Frag! is a very fun anime. If jokes, parodies, puns and sarcasm are your thing, then look no further.
There's never a dull moment so the episodes are over before you know it. That's honestly the only problem I have with it. It easily survived my "3 episode test" and I look forward to reviewing this weekly!
